Bishop to preside at Dignity prayer service

by Doreen Cudnik Cleveland-The Most Rev. Anthony J. Pilla, bishop of Cleveland, will preside at Dignity Cleveland's 25th anniversary prayer service, to be held in Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist downtown.

Dignity invites all lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender Catholics, their families and friends to join them in celebration of the group's quarter-century of service to the Cleveland LGBT Catholic community. The service is set for Friday, December 4, 7 p.m. at the cathedral, located on the corner of E. 9th St. and Superior Ave.

The prayer service will be followed by a reception with Bishop Pilla at 8 p.m. in the Rappe Room of the Catholic Center located on the cathedral campus. A donation of $5 per person is requested to help cover the cost of the reception. There will be free indoor parking, courtesy of the diocese, in the cathedral's parking garage on Rockwell Ave. next door to the cathedral.

There will be a meeting on November 22, following Dignity Cleveland's monthly celebration of the Eucharist at the 10:30 a.m. Mass at Our Lady of Peace church at E. 125th and Shaker Blvd., to discuss ways to make the December

prayer service with Bishop Pilla a successful and spiritually moving event. For more information call Dan at 216-486-0156 or Judy at 216227-1243.

City is a 'Best Lesbian Place'

Columbus Congratulations to Columbus on being named as one of the "Best Lesbian Places to Live" in Girlfriends magazine's December 1998 issue.

Ohio's queer-friendly state capitol ranked number 8 on the fourth annual Reader's Choice "Beyond the Gay Ghetto" poll. The article singles out Clintonville-"fondly known among natives as 'Clitville' "—as a hotbed of dyke activity, and gives props to Ohio State University for "draw[ing] lesbians to this town in droves."

"You can fix you car at the dyke-owned Alternative Auto Care, rock out with 2,500 at the annual Ohio Lesbian Festival, praise the Lord at one of the city's five gay congregations, or score in one of Columbus's dozens of queer sports leagues," Girlfriends editor in chief Heather Findlay writes. "If you want to wet your whistle and watch a drag king show, choose from one of this Midwestern hub's-count 'em-10 lesbian bars and coffee houses. Ain't nobody gonna bother you for it either: thanks in good part to its longstanding Stonewall Center, Columbus has powerful anti-discrimination laws and even an 'ethnic intimidation' law to protect citizens from racist harassment." After mentioning essentials like population, average rent for a two-bedroom apartment and average temperatures—“29 degrees Jan., 73 degrees July”—the poll lists "Columbus Quest home games" as the fave hangout for Columbus dykes and christens lesbian comedienne Suzanne Westenhoeffer as the "local heroine."

Way to go, Columbus, we knew it all along.

Making Porn extended

Columbus-Due to sellout performances, Act Out Productions has extended the run of Making Porn until Saturday, December 5. The play, written by Ronnie Larsen, comically explores the outcome when a married, straight, out of work actor turns to gay porn films to make a living. Additional performances are ThursdaySaturday, December 3-5 at 8 p.m.

Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling Act Out Productions at 614-263-9448 or Reality Theatre at 614294-7541. Performances are at Reality, 736 N. Pearl St.

Cole is new chorus director

Cleveland-Just in time for its upcoming concert season, the North Coast Men's Chorus announced November 12 that Richard Cole will be appointed as the new music director of Cleveland's gay men's concert chorus.

Active with the chorus for the past nine years, Cole will bring a diverse blend of leadership and experience to the chorus. When Tim Robson stepped down as director in December 1997, Cole became the chorus' interim director.

"His experience with the chorus provides a particularly intimate working knowledge, which should pay off in a fabulous eleventh season," said chorus vice president Jeffrey Lamkin.

One of Cole's first goals for the chorus includes increasing membership and concert attendance for the new season. He also plans to develop a more active relationship between the chorus and the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses, a national umbrella organizational that develops programming, music and coalitions between gay and lesbian choruses and ensembles.

Cole is already busy at work with the North Coast Men's Chorus on its upcoming concert series, which will kick off with "Merry Gentlemen," the chorus' annual holiday concerts, set for Dec. 12 at Euclid Ave. Church, 9606 Euclid Ave., and Dec. 13 at Pilgrim Church, 2592 West 14th St.

For more information on upcoming chorus events or membership, call 216473-8919.

HIV vaccine trial at OSU

Columbus-More than 150 volunteers from throughout Ohio are being sought to participate in the first-ever large-scale test of a vaccine that may prevent HIV infection. Ohio State University Medical Center is Ohio's only study site for the vaccine, which will be administered to a total of 5,000 volunteers at 30 to40 clinics throughout the nation.

The vaccine has been proven safe in previous studies, according to Dr. Michael Para of the AIDS Clinical Trials Unit at OSU Medical Center.

"This phase of the study will determine if the vaccine is effective in preventing HIV infection," said Para.

Although there are other AIDS vaccines under development, this vaccine is the first to reach efficacy testing. This is required before approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The vaccine, called AIDSvax, is not made from live HIV and therefore can not cause HIV infection or AIDS.

Study volunteers will be men who have sex with men or women with HIV-positive partners, or others at higher risk of acquiring the HIV virus. People wishing to enroll in the study can call the AIDS Clinical Trials Unit at Ohio State at 614-293-8112, or e-mail HIVvaccine@osu.edu

Artists needed to paint town

Cleveland-The Open House, an organization offering support and services to people with HIV and AIDS, is looking for artists and other creative people willing to share their undiscovered talents to help create decorations for Paint the Town Red, a charity auction held in February.

There will be three production parties: on November 12 from 1 to 4 p.m.; December 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. and January 9 from 1 to 4 p.m. Food will be provided for those "starving artists" who care enough to lend their skills to the fight against AIDS.

Helping out can also earn you admission to the gala event, one of the most festive AIDS fundraisers of the year. For more information, call the Open House at 216229-6722.
